Auto Incident Tips
- Call 911 if some one is injured. Do not move injured persons
- Contact the police on a non emergency number if there are no injuries
- Do not leave the scene of the accident until the police arrive. It is frequently a felony to leave the scene of an accident particularly if there is bodily injury
- If possible, remove the vehicles from the roadway, noting their position at the time they came to rest
- Exchange information with other vehicle drivers including name, address, phone number for work and home, license plate number, state and insurance policy information
- Do not get into arguments with the drivers or passengers of any other vehicles
- Obtain the names, addresses and phone numbers of any witnesses to the incident
- If you have a camera available, carefully take pictures of the accident scene including skid marks and all vehicles involved (photos should include license plates if possible). A disposable camera in the glove compartment is advisable
- Note the length and direction of any skid marks
- If you do not have a camera, make a diagram of the scene and the accident
- Notify your insurance company immediately. The easiest way to notify your insurance company is to call your agent
- Keep your conversations with the other participants in the incident to a minimum (do not admit guilt)
- Be courteous to the investigating police officer and obtain the officers name, department and report number. Tell the truth
- Keep a journal of the accident including your recollection of the accident
- Comply with State laws which may require the submission of motor vehicle accident reports
